The beaches near villa amigo
You are all pale after a hard winter and you badly want golden sand and turquoise sea, dazzling sun and coconut palms as far as the eye can see. Look no further, the most beautiful beaches in the Dominican Republic, wide, wild, deserted, with warm and clear waters, with majestic coconut palms leaning towards the golden sand have all met here. They share the limelight near the village of Las Terranas and Villa Amigo.
They are multiple and each time unique, like escaped from a postcard. Symbol of the holidays and the sun, heavenly, in the very heart of Las Terrenas or a stone’s throw away, they are called Coson, Bonita, Playa Marico (Las Ballenas), Playa Las Terrenas, Punta Popy, Portillo…
Small hidden shores or wide beaches available to all, soft sand and turquoise water, let’s discover these dream beaches, close to Villa Amigo.
Cosón
Cosón is a sandy beach as you have not yet dared to dream of and which will make you capsize, it is the beach par excellence, very easy to access on foot from your villa. Imagine a 10 km long strip of white sand, practically deserted and lined with coconut palms. The water here is warm and sometimes rebellious, to the delight of lovers of water sports such as kiteboarding or surfing. We like to bask there, laze languidly while letting ourselves be caressed by our friend the sun or go exploring for long, long walks in search of the sand dollar, or even frolic in the fresh water, turquoise color and deliciously fresh. at the mouth of the two rios. A few small, bohemian or chic restaurants have gathered there. Luis, who needs no introduction, and his lopsided little paillotte delights us with his grilled fish, his lobster or his famous conch.
A nice, friendly and unfussy stopover is a must at Casa Coson, a delicious guest house and beach restaurant. More chic, but just as nice, The Beach, a charming Creole house and its tasty cuisine, is none other than the beach club of the prestigious Peninsula House.
Bonita
This is your beach, one of the jewels of Las Terrenas, a few steps from Villa Amigo. Cliché, so what… but yes, it deserves its name. Playa Bonita is a magical place. Beautiful, immaculate, calm or turbulent, depending on your mood (its friendly waves are ideal for those who are new to surfing, the pretty Carolina has also set up her school there). It is a long and beautiful bay fringed with coconut palms and separated from Las Terrenas by a rocky point called Punta Bonita. The coastal path along the ocean is pedestrian and, arriving in front of the barrier which prohibits access to cars, we take a big slap. The panorama is just fabulous and the colors unique in the world, it’s… wow.
Las Ballenas, left bank trend...
Too funny, the name of this fabulous beach is a subject of squabble between the old ones who are fond of Playa Marico from the name of the small river and its lagoon at the very end, and the new ones who prefer Las Ballenas compared to the rocky islets that one can be seen offshore, one of them having the vague shape of a whale. Anyway, it is one of the most beautiful beaches in the village, wide and white, 4 km long, it is bounded on both sides by the Rio Marico, near the Loma Bonita and the Rio Las Terrenas. Thanks to a coral reef that protects it from the swell, Playa Las Ballenas is the ideal place to swim peacefully in the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean or lie down on the fine sand in the shade of the coconut trees or even share a good meal with your feet in the warm sand in one of the many small beach restaurants. It is also a paradise for water sports such as sailing and kayaking, which are practiced at the sailing club. Young and old alike meet there for great afternoons with the family.
Fisherman's beach 3 words of poetry...
So as not to miss out on authenticity, dare to take a short gourmet stroll to the Plage des Pêcheurs….
It is, without a doubt, the essential spot, the one that will take you back in time by immersing you in the blink of an eye in the middle of Las Terrenas “before”. A colorful bario, small cabins, a little or a lot askew, in wood, sheet metal, palm leaves, a pretty bric a brac of heterogeneous constructions, acid yellow, sparkling orange, azure blue, turquoise, emerald green, … . placed on the sand close to the ocean. We have lunch there without fuss, feet in the sand, in the middle of a delicious jumble of fishing boats in a good-natured atmosphere where we do not hesitate to call each other from table to table, without even knowing each other. And, if the authentic nomadic style of the improvised decor plays a big role in this permanent craze, the fish market next door also attracts onlookers, delighted to attend, amazed, at the arrival, sometimes incredible, of local fishermen. We take full eyes and full taste buds. Clin-Clin, Dulce, Zu, Pacomer, Le Sunset, La Salamandre, El Pirata… and all the others, Dominicans, Chileans, Venezuelans concoct you with love and passion fresh fish, lobsters, cicadas, shrimps, land crabs or others santollo with bewitching Caribbean flavours, rich in coconut, ginger, cilentrico, lime, turmeric, chinola…… A sparkling festival of just sublime flavours.
Poppy
On the right bank of the Rio Las Terrenas, Playa Popy, a long but narrow white sand beach, lined with multiple coconut trees and grape trees, is most certainly the busiest beach in the village. Located along the road that leads to Portillo, it is easily accessible on foot and the many bars and restaurants that have taken up residence there, attract both tourists and Dominicans from the capital or elsewhere who like to come and spend there. the weekend. In recent years, the once superb beach has tended to shrink, but its transparent waters still encourage snorkeling, especially at Punta Popy, a very pretty spot whose huge shaded beach regularly hosts many events, such as Festivella, Etnomix or the Village Festival. Punta Popy is recognized as one of the best kite-surfing spots in the Dominican Republic, thanks to its clear and deep water, and the little pronounced chop from April to August.
Playa El Portillo
Less than 4 kilometers east of Playa Popy, right next to the old El Portillo airport, which ceased operations in February 2012, more secret than its turbulent neighbor, Playa El Portillo is a little frequented beach. White sand lined with coconut trees, crystal clear water, it is a delight for kite surfing enthusiasts who take advantage of the sea breeze to fly over this heavenly place. There are also several kite surfing schools that teach beginners the basics of this sport.
